Community Feedback

To enhance the quality of our services, Subscan has integrated the Moonbase Testnet into our system. We are seeking feedback from the community to understand the interest and needs regarding the continued use of Subscan Explorer on Moonbase Alpha and other test networks. We welcome community members to share their views, and whether they see a necessity for explorers for both testnets. This feedback will help us better tailor and optimize our services to meet user expectations and requirements.

hey @yakioliu, Thank you for submitting your proposal! subscan is an explorer I personally find very useful

I noticed a few things that could use some corrections. there is a typo in the

where “USD&to*” should be corrected

also, the term

should be corrected to “Moonbeam, Moonriver, and Moonbase Alpha networks” for consistency

I have a few questions and points I would like to clarify:

  1. given that Moonbase Alpha is a testnet, what specific adjustments or additional work is required compared to the mainnets that justify the full fee?

  2. could you clarify the procedural changes in governance that led to the closure of Proposal #2 and the basis for the compensation request of 4,206.95 GLMR?

  3. how does subscan plan to integrate community feedback, especially regarding the Moonbase Testnet? can you share any initial feedback received so far?

  4. I’m personally receiving some requests / feedback from the community sometimes. Is there a contact that we can point the community to reach your team if they have good feedback

Hi @turrizt , thank you very much for your review and questions. I’m happy to address them:

Given that Moonbase Alpha is a testnet, what specific adjustments or additional work is required compared to the mainnets that justify the full fee?

The current fee covers only cover operations and maintenance costs and does not include any development-related expenses. It’s directly tied to resource usage. In fact, due to the extended runtime of the testnet and some stress testing (I presume), Moonbase currently occupies 2.26 TB of data, second only to Kusama and Polkadot. For reference, Moonbeam uses 1.31 TB, and Moonriver uses 1.03 TB. Please note, this proposal covers the years 2022 and 2023, during which the usage would have been lower.

If the data on the testnet is not crucial, I suggest periodically resetting the testnet (a practice many networks adopt), which would significantly reduce operational costs. Of course, this depends on the Moonbeam team’s considerations regarding the testnet.

As time progresses, resource consumption continues to grow, which is why the fees for 2023 are higher than those for 2022. Despite this, we are not even covering our costs, as we are offering a discounted rate due to the significant support Moonbeam provided us early on.

Could you clarify the procedural changes in governance that led to the closure of Proposal #2 and the basis for the compensation request of 4,206.95 GLMR?

At that time, Subscan submitted a standard invoice to the team, but we were informed it did not meet the treasury requirements. Given the high priority of the treasury-related upgrades and the short timeframe, Subscan could not prepare a detailed proposal. Therefore, after discussing with the team, we suggested rejecting this proposal and compensating for the related losses through a subsequent proposal (After the proposal is rejected, the reserved funds will be slashed).

How does Subscan plan to integrate community feedback, especially regarding the Moonbase Testnet? Can you share any initial feedback received so far?

We’ve received requests from both Moonbeam and Tanssi developers indicating that the Moonbase (Aleph) Testnet is important to them.
Of course, they also hope that I can use this opportunity to solicit the opinions of the community to see if the community needs subscan to integrate two test networks at the same time. We remain open to this.

I’m personally receiving some requests/feedback from the community sometimes. Is there a contact that we can point the community to reach your team if they have good feedback?

Previously, we were unable to communicate directly with the Moonbeam community. However, we now know about the forum channel, and we welcome everyone to discuss more about Subscan optimizations and suggestions here and @yakioliu .

Hi @yakioliu ,

Thank you for brining this up here on the Forum.
The @TreasuryCouncil will review and discuss your proposal in its upcoming coordination meeting and follow up soon.

In the meantime, would you mind providing some numbers for possible cost reduction if there were potentially a “purge” of data in the Moonbase Alpha?

Thank you for your follow-up @lina.k.m . We are pleased to share that Subscan’s pricing structure is transparent. Our Subscan Maintenance Packages offer tiered pricing based on actual usage:

a. Basic: Up to 200 GB at $799/month; beyond 200 GB at $5.3/GB. This plan automatically upgrades to the next tier after 350 GB.

b. Advanced: Up to 500 GB at $1,699/month; beyond 500 GB at $5.2/GB. This plan automatically upgrades to the next tier after 750 GB.

c. Professional: Up to 1 TB at $2,999/month; beyond 1 TB at $5/GB.

Based on Moonbase’s previous usage, it is expected that after the testnet reset, the cost will remain at the lowest tier, which is $799/month, for at least six months.

Additionally, we support prepayment options. The prepayment will be based on the current latest prices, and any additional resources added later will not incur extra charges, serving as a discount. Just for your reference.

Hey @yakioliu,

Thanks for your patience while we were discussing the proposal internally.

I’m sure you can understand that it was a complex discussion when evaluating 2022 funding in mid-2024.
Usually that would result in rejection of the proposal as the treasury is operated in 6-month-terms by the selected council members.

However, we agreed upon an exception here as the Moonbeam Treasury Council was just being formed when you came up with the initial request.

You can move forward and submit the proposals on-chain.

For future funding we expect you to submit the proposals in a timely manner.
We’d kindly ask you to submit a proposal for the year 2024 retroactively at the end of the year and afterwards one retroactive proposal every 6 months.
