Moonbeam Governance Guild (MGG)

Hey everyone,
We are excited to launch the Moonbeam Governance Guild (MGG), an initiative designed to enhance Moonbeam and Moonriver governance by empowering you, our community.

The MGG aims to distribute governance responsibilities by delegating a total of 5 million GLMR and 50,000 MOVR tokens to 10 dedicated delegates (5 for Moonbeam and 5 for Moonriver). Our goal is to foster a more engaged, representative, and dynamic governance structure.

Key Details:

  • Application period: 24 Oct - 7 Nov, 2024
  • Term: Delegates will serve for 6 months to ensure a diverse governance approach.
  • Accountability: They are required to maintain transparency through regular voting reports on socials, updates here on the Forum, and overall program metrics.
  • Incentives: As a reward for their participation and contribution they are to receive 50% of the staking rewards of the delegated token amount. Selected candidates will need to go through the KYC process.

Recruitment Process:

Starting today, we invite all interested community members to apply for the delegate role by filling out the application form. The application will be evaluated on one’s community standing, governance participation, and social presence. The recruitment process will last for 2 weeks.

Selection will be based on an alignment with Moonbeam’s values, expertise, and track record in governance of the networks. While the criteria are public, selections by the Moonbeam Foundation (MBF) will be at their discretion.

Delegate Responsibilities:

  • Engage in discussions here on the Forum, vote for proposals, and provide regular updates.
  • Share insights and decisions behind each vote, engage in educational outreach, and produce content about key features or updates quarterly.
  • Create a Community Delegate profile on the Karma dashboard
  • Full disclosure required during the application process and throughout the term.

Moonbeam Foundation will oversee the MGG initiative, from selection to ongoing support. Delegates’ performance will be assessed bi-monthly and the findings will be shared on the Forum.

We are looking forward to the applications from community members who are passionate about shaping the future of Moonbeam and Moonriver.

hey Lina, thanks a bunch for this proposal and for leading this amazing initiative! it’s an incredible opportunity for community members to participate and help even more decentralize our beloved chains

i do have a few questions:

  1. could you share a bit more insight into how this will work? from what i understand, the Foundation will stake tokens and delegate them to delegates, and then half of the rewards the foundation receives will be distributed to the delegates, right? so, this won’t be the Foundation’s collator rewards but rather delegator rewards, correct?

  2. also, can the same delegate be active in both Moonriver and Moonbeam?

  3. what happens if a delegate stops voting or providing reports?

hey Turrizt,
great questions and i’ll answer them in order:

  1. Yes, correct. MBF is using tokens from the “Long-Term Protocol & Ecosystem Development” allocation to delegate tokens to the delegates. These tokens are also being staked and delegates will receive 50% of the staking rewards from the tokens delegated to them. And to add to that, the delegate rewards will be paid out after each bi-monthly assessment and sent to the wallet address they indicated in the application form.
  2. One can apply to be considered for both networks, but will be chosen only for 1. The reason behind is to give opportunities to the most amount of people. The more diversity of opinion, the better for decentralization (although harder, haha!)
  3. We are hoping that delegates will be responsible and conscientious, BUT life (sh*t) happens. So, in case the delegate cannot carry on with their responsibilities, the delegation will be revoked and redistributed among the rest of the delegates . We might select a new delegate from the list of candidates who applied. But i’m hoping for the best!

I hope these answer your questions.

Thanks for introducing this program! I think it’s a great idea to incentivize the community to participate more in governance activity. It works quite well in Polkadot and I believe it should have a positive effect in RiverBeam as well

Personally I decided to apply, and I’ll try to be more active in governance regardless!
